New York City! Hamilton/Mamilton

My favorite city is New York City. I went there for my sister’s belated birthday. Her 10th birthday happened just before covid hit. Our parents had promised her that as a birthday present, she would get to choose one place to go to and one thing that she wanted to do there. She chose New York City and Hamilton. Sadly, covid hit and she couldn’t go. She was devastated. Then, at twelve years old, our parents bought tickets. They had done it! We were going to New York City!

We went to NYC for a week and on that Friday, we went to Hamilton.

It was a Friday evening with perfect weather, we were heading to a fancy Italian restaurant, and then we would go to Hamilton. We were buzzing with excitement (we, being my mom, my sister Jiya, and I) as we ate. Once we finished, we called a cab, got there, and waited for a long time in a long line. Finally, it was time, we went to our seats in the middle of the theater. I remember feeling that “this was it, it is time” and being VERY excited. I knew some of the verses in the first couple of songs, but it was my sister who sang the most songs (and verses). At intermission, we went up to get some snacks and then we ran into a friend from school, which was a surprising delight. It turns out that they were sitting near us, so we hurried back together just in time. Hamilton was one of the best experiences that I have ever had, and I will never forget it.

When we were leaving, my sister got a sweatshirt and I wanted one too, but they didn’t have one in my size, so I got a T-shirt instead.

A few months ago, I made a puppet show called Mamilton, a year ago I watched Hamilton.

I was staying at my aunt’s house because my parents were gone for my mom’s birthday. I was staring at my sister, who was making a dinosaur stuffie for my mom, yes making a dinosaur stuffie. I thought to myself “I need to make a heartfelt gift for my mom”, so I made a list. There was one item on my list that caught my eye.

- Mamilton (because we went to NY and saw Hamilton; also “Mamilton” because

Mama loves animals, and I am pretty sure that Hamilton is copywritten)

It was perfect, so I started right away. I decided to do it in the moviemaking game in the ABCYA app, but it didn’t save my creation. Even if I kept the app open. Then, I started thinking about a puppet show. The puppet show idea won out, but I was going to need some adult help. I asked my aunt, and she said yes.

First, I decided what we wanted it to look like and I designed the set. Next, we got the wood and fabrics that we needed and started building. Every time that I saw them building, I smiled. After that, we fixed a date for the show. I went to my aunt's house every day to rewrite the Hamilton lyrics and rehearse for the show. We also got puppets and we also got backgrounds. Finally, it was time, everything was rey. I sang the changed lyrics of some of the songs and moved the puppets around. My dad and sister left, but my mom and aunt stayed. Now, I plan to use the custom, handmade puppet theater for other birthdays and occasions, have you ever heard of Shakespeare?

What I learned from this is that travel can inspire, Hamilton inspired me to create my own, and travel could inspire you to do much more. I also learned that if you work hard and persist you can imagine something and make it come to life. (You can watch a clip of me performing here)
